What are some common optimization practices? for mysql i use indexes and limit my numbr of queries, but whats common for php? ive cut down on how much coding there is, spliut the coding into different files (only call what i need)

Rasmus Lerdorf has given talks in the past about benchmarking and optimising web apps, the slides are here: http://talks.php.net/show/yul/24
It's quite interesting.

I'm usually weary of the information presented on about.com. Most of the time there are much better sources of information.

Although it is an interesting slideshow, these are low level optimizations. I think the questioner means things like function X vs. function Y, etc.
