Wierd Windows Flaw

Hello. I just bought a top-of-the-line VAIO system with Windows XP Home. ...When I hover my mouse on to the system tray to see the specs or info for the programs that are running, or just to see the date when hovering over the time, for some very wierd reason the little yellow text box that's supposed to appear, appears on the back of the bar, instead of the front.

Wierd, ain't it?

Um, I'm *guessing* the taskbar is set to be always on top. I'm not using XP at the minute but I suspect this can be changed by right clicking somewhere on the taskbar. Still it's strange that the tooltip is appearing behind...

Yes, my the taskbar is always displayed on top - but that means displayed on top of everything like the actual tasks, not the tooltip! See, the tooltip 50% of the times displays on top, correctly as it should, but 50% of the times it displays on the back of the taskbar. I know this because I can see the side of the box peeking from behind.

It is pretty strange. And it also happens on my Windows 98 machine. Does it not happen to you? And do you what I can try to get it to work right? It's just so annoying sometimes.

I searched M$ knowledge base but found no leads, maybe I'll mail Billy boy and have him sort it out ;)

xp is crap, yes i said it, crap.
win2k pro is the best windows operating system to come out yet.

I don't like xp either. I've been waiting for the 'superior windows platform'. But my dislikes for xp (and maybe even win2k) are the severe limitations of dos programs. It also bugs me how win2k, xp, and xp pro have different features that should have been combined in 1 os long ago.

Microsoft's operating systems are waging war on each other. Each one contradicts the next. XP and 2k is not dos friendly from what I heard (haven't used them much), while most tasks are better done from batch files and other dos things. Persuade me, what's the best os as far as support both dos and windows stuff?

XP and 2K do both run dos apps... However, you do this with the understanding that your app is not compatible not the os that you are attempting to use it on... Most dos apps were written in 8bit with a few written in 16bit...

And they are not fighting each other...

XP and XP Pro are the latest and greatest that Microsoft has to offer... XP and XP Pro are the culmination of a project that Microsoft started 10yrs ago... Anyone remember the phrase, "All roads lead to Cairo..."

Anywho, Microsoft started by trying to market a product that was originally written for another Seattle based company, Northern Telecom... Windows NT as it was named was designed to be very secure and run a 32bit platform (hence little or no support for 8bit or 16bit written applications)... One problem, Windows NT was to user unfriendly and non-Plug and Play supportive... So M$ made Windows NT into their version of a Server Supportive OS and then created and released Windows 95... Better Soft-set and plug and play support, but carpy security...

Here is what we got:

User Friendly:
95 --> 95B --> 98 --> 98SE --> ME

Server Side:
WinNT 3.5 --> WinNT 3.51 --> WinNT 4.0 --> Win2K -- Win2K Advanced Server

Where does XP come into all this you ask... It doesn't... XP is the final combination of the server side security and the user friendliness that people wanted... Yes there is much much more than that, but this is just a brief overview...

Oh and in case your asking, the only difference between XP and XP Pro is that XP Pro comes with networking enabled while XP does not... This is because XP would be used by more home users, hence XP Home edition and XP Pro would be used by more businesses, hence XP Professional...

I use 98se on my newer computer, and dos 6.22 on my older. But I have a game and several programs that will not run on xp nomatter what compatibility mode you try. It's at

the only thing an NT operating system is good for is a large business network...

as much as I hate to say that ANY windows OS is good, I have to with 98SE simple because of software and hardware compatibility. Just about everything works on 98SE, and you can cut down on the errors if you've got the updates (and some knowledge ;) )

Of course, you realize, that the Mac OS will always reign supreme:D

what is all this talk about the different versions of windows. They wil always contradict one another and never have it right. Red Hat all the way.(then again i am just a little biased)

I strongly doubt that the crackintosh will rise to anything enough to rival windows; not even DOS. Just my opinion.

To run it you also need the VB6 runtime,

Attention:
There could be some odd behavior with windows that was already opened while running the fix, so reopening them will help.

p.s.: The fix applies HWND_TOPMOST to all windows where "ToolTip" found in it's classname.
