Im really interested in this subject and I have looked into this before bit I noticed this site posted on a domain for sale

www.domainshop.com

This site has diamondcity.com for sale at $49,500. Is it really possible to register a domain name for $15.00 and sell it for $49,500???

Frustratingly many good domain names have holding pages by whats stopping somone from register even average domain names and selling on for $500.00. Its still a very healthy profit margin.

I've also heard that one investment company set up a department to buy domain names and rent them out, looking to make 1000% profit over a 25 year period.

How can you rent out something you don't own in the first place. Domain names aren't sold to start with, they are only licenced for limited periods after which you have to renew the licence for a further period.

Clearly it's possible Powerweb, after all they are doing it. And renting too does happen, regardless of the technicalities of licensing. Eg, I used to work with someone who rented golf.co.uk from the owner - and that domain now appears to be rented by somebody else as it's totally changed.

Domain generally aren't hugely valuable by themselves, unless they're short, meaningful, or receive a lot of type in traffic (golf.co.uk covers all of the above). It's usually the history associated with them that gives them their value.

In the case of diamondcity.com they appear to be betting on someone with more money than sense turning up, since it has no history and has been on sale since early 2003.

Nevertheless domaining is big business.

They aren't renting it for $49,500, they're selling it for that much. Give them that much money and they will transfer the domain to you, and then you have the domain for the rest of the time that it's registered for. Of course after this time expires, you have the choice to renew it or not (of course you will, that's what you actually paid for, so you can have the domain as long as you want).

The renting wasn't in reference to that particular domain:

I registered www.theforexforums.com for $15.00 in December 2005, setup up a phpBB forum and then sold it for $100.00 in November 2006. The new owner has done nothing with it.
