how can i clear my desktop in windows 2000 pro to only have the recycle bin? i know how to do it in xp, but i dont see the option where you can remove the standard icons (my computer, my docs, outlook express, etc..). i dont want to delete them. or do i have to?

Install TweakUI, it should take care of the icons really easily. There may be a way to do it natively within Windows, but I don't have 2k installed.

well, i installed it and when i tried to remove network neighborhood of my desktop and tweakUI said that there would be circumstances that wouldn't be seen immediately. what circumstances do they speak of?

also, the internet explorer, my computer, and my documents folder are still on the desktop. in tweakUI there isn't an option to remove them. any other program that might help me remove them?

Hmm. I've never heard of that happening before. I'm not sure of the circumstances of which it speaks. Try this (http://answers.vt.edu/ask4help/desktop/vtkb2207.htm) for removing My Documents. The others might be in that menu also.

i've checked a couple of sites but the majority just tell how to remove the internet explorer icon. the others didn't provide good/clear instructions.

i also found another program, called Iconoid which hides the desktop completely if wanted. link: http://www.sillysot.com/download.htm . It doesn't do exactly what i want it to do though. I guess I'll just leave the My Computer icon on the desktop.
