Are you using it as your primary or secondary harddrive? Check your jumpers to make sure they are set properly. I can't remember off the top of my head how the jumps should be set. I think the black piece needs to be on the 2nd set of pins.

The tech page for the part number you gave - http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=1391
And the manual, don't mention or show connectors for SATA or SCSI. Are you sure about the part number? Are you using an add in interface card?
It does have parallel ATA connectors, IEEE1394/Firewire connectors, and USB connectors, but a SATA cable would not plug into any of these.

I think i know what's up :)
This next-generation SATA hard drive features a 16 MB cache and a 300 MB/s transfer rate for lightning-fast performance - blabla
I think u bought a S-ata 2 disk, instead of S-ata 1. There should be a jumper on the HD itself, so u cab make it compatible using S-ata 1.

i have tried all the jumpers and still it doesn't show... I have just gone to control panel then..
SCSI and RAID controller.. / Silcon image Sil 3112 SATALink Controller
this comes up with a little !! and in trouble shooting it says
The device cannot find enough free resourses, that it can use code 12
but i have also tried to free other devices.. but nothing ???
any more ideas...
mnay thanks chris....

"Free resources"
It means that all avaible resources on your computer are in use, and the OS can't find anything else left that's free.
U can do 2 things: Goto your computer bios, and make sure it's set at "P&P OS installed = yes" and the second one is disable devices in either windows or the bios, but this second step is'nt required at all if you apply the first step.
Things like Serial port, Firewire (i.e things u don't use) can be removed / disabled from the computer.
Good luck.

"P&P OS installed = yes" should be set to "No" for win32
Probably SATA is simply turned off in bios... look under the advanced or drive settings (not a clue where exactly it is on your bios) but it will be there somewhere.

"P&P OS installed = yes" should be set to "No" for win32
Are you kidding me? Starting from windows 95 it's already Plug & Play capable. If he's on any type of Windows (95) he can put on P&P into "Yes".
U only should turn it on No when u are working with a Non P&P Os, like older Linux or MS-Dos / Windows 3.11.

I have gone into the bios.. found PnP/PCI CONFIGURATIONS
I have entered this... then i have
PC11/PC15 IRQ Assignment (USB HOST CONTROL bus 0)
PC12 IRQ Assignment (network, multi media, usb)
PC13 IRQ Assignment (RAID Controller Bus 0, DEV 15 Function 0)
PC14 IRQ Assignment (display controller)
I have the option to change them from AUTO, to 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ect to 15
i have also tried to turn off everything i can in periferals (however you spell it) :)
does this info help... i have loads.. but nothing...
:) cheers for all your help...

In `Integrated Periperals` in bios what is the `RAID controller function` set at ? try seting it to RAID & don't mess around with IRQ settings, if you have, reset back to bios defaults before trying anything else.

No I am not kidding you, IME the bios does a far better job at assigning hardware resources than win32 ever did... thats just my opinion though which I should have stated.

But basically, the reason you can't get the drive to work, is that the controller isn't working properly.
Do you have a lot of devices on your system? I haven't seen a device not start do to lack of resources in a long time, which kind of makes suspect maybe something else is not right. If the SATA controller is enabled in the BIOS, I'd suggest reseting the BIOS to the defaults and then make sure the SATA controller is enabled.

Ok, did you install the correct drivers for the SATA controller? Maybe try getting them from Gigabyte's site instead of using the one's that came with the board on a CD if you haven't already.
It isn't a problem with the drive, its a problem with the drive controller on the motherboard.
