I am at my wits end. It is so annoying and I haven't got a clue what to do next... so I am hoping that a kind soul will help me out here...Ok here goes: I have written it all out so that a clear picture could be given...sorry if it's too detailed.

Okay. I have a desktop computer. And I have a recently bought laptop. The dial-up internet works fine on the desktop computer. When I first added the connection to my new laptop, it worked fine and that was the only time I used it - once and only for half an hour.

When I tried accessing the Internet on my laptop this week, I had big problems. It kept showing 'internet explorer cannot display the web page'. So I started all over. I have written about these step by step below.

In tools and INTERNET OPTIONS, I clicked on CONNECTIONS to follow the procedure for setting up a connection. I clicked on ADD to add the dial-up connection and entered the dial-up information: ISP dial-up phone number, User name and password.
I chose the option to allow all users of my laptop to have access to this connection and clicked ok or whatever to make my choices and information active.

A ‘connecting to the internet’ box came up and the process of connecting began. It showed the dial-up number it was dialling …then said verifying user name and password, connected, authenticated. Then another box came up saying ‘testing connection’ which stayed for some time. Then the result came: ‘the internet connectivity test was unsuccessful’ with the options: 'try again, diagnose the problem, set up the connection anyway'. When I clicked on ‘diagnose the problem’, it said windows did not find any problems with this network connection.
If I repeated the steps and clicked on ‘set up the connection anyway’ this time, then a box came up saying ‘the connection to the internet is ready to use’ and 'to connect to the internet next time, click the start button, click connect to, and then click the connection you just created.’

When I do this, the box that comes up asks for my password, which I enter. My user name is already there so I don’t need to enter it. It does that dial-up connection thing again, verifying user name and password, etc and this time it then tells me ‘successfully connected to Dial-up connection.’ But when I click the internet explorer icon, it displays a page saying ‘internet explorer cannot display the web page.’

So I now go to tools and internet options again and click on connections and then on settings. I find in the password section, my password seems to be very long of many more digits/characters than my correct one. So does this mean that the password is being changed in the process somehow? And that is the cause of my problems? If so, how, why? More importantly, what should I do?

Very frustrated. Really do not know what to do.   Can anyone help, advise?

I'm far from an expert on dial up connections so I may be wrong here. For your password length changing, it sounds like it is probably getting encrypted which would change the length, so you probably don't need to worry about that. When it says that you are connected to the internet, do you get an IP address? To find out, bring up command prompt and type "ipconfig" without quotes and it will give you the information there. You may want to try another browser as well like firefox just to rule out browser issues. Also, check the device manager to make sure there are no issues reported with your modem card and its drivers.

if you get a response from the ipconfig (and see an IP and gateway address listed) try turning off firewalls/anti-virus to see if that lets you through.

+ did you have to setup any proxy server settings on your desktop ? if so you need to do the same on the laptop (depending on your ISP)
