I want to buy a new laptop for school since my bulky HP is annoying to carry. I just want a laptop to be able to be used for programming and text editing (powerpoint presentations and the like). I was interestrested in buying a Dell Latitude L400 P3 700Mhz 256M, 20Gb, CDRW/DVD Win2K, since it is cheap. Do you think Visual Studio 2003 will run on that configuration?

Yeah it should run OK on it. Not like lightning fast but it won't be too bad. Running Win2k on it over XP will help too.

thank you. do you think that is a reliable setup to start making basic windows apps?

You might want to look into upgrading the memory to 512 if you get it. You'll get a noticeable performance gain.

20 GB will get filled fast with installing an OS and the huge .NET framework. I think the install size of 2003 is 3.5GB without the documentation and something like 1.9GB more if you wna the full documentation.

Also you will need to bump up the RAM or you will probably see some slow performance on the machine. I think mine uses up 160MB-170MB just loading studio.

I have run 2003 on that amount of RAM, but I would have to walk away when I did a build.

Also I bet if you Search for: Visual Studio 2003 System Requirements : on your favorite search engine you will get what MS recommends which is normally low balled.
