Just use an encryption/hash script that you feel comfortable with

e.g. RC4 or MD5
There are plenty available.

You shouldn't be storing anything that needs encrypting inside a cookie.

You mean like this site where your hashed password is stored in a cookie if you choose to be logged in automatically?
