Is it possible to dynamically populate a textarea with data from a database?

I'm trying to re-create a listbox with the textarea element.
Is it possible to dynamically populate the textarea with data from a database?.
I want the data to list vertically like a listbox.

If this possible, can you please provide an example of how I can go about doing this?.

I'm confused.
why do you need <textarea> for the listbox???
why would you need access to db AFTER the page has loaded (at least that is the way I interpret "dynamically")
if you are talking about populating a field when the page is loading, it has no relevance to how you get the data (database or not), but how you represent it.
