Does any one here own a web design business, were they design web sites for people over the Internet? Did anyone use Google AdWords if so how long did it take you to get a client and how much per click were you paying?

Word of mouth does me fine. Although I work as freelance, not as a 'proper' company

Me too. And I think you get most job offers by someone recommending you, not by some stupid Google ad.
Also it helped me a lot to put my profile into a web designer directory on the internet.

You could put a free ad in www.craigslist.com under services/creative.
