The amount of pictures one can put in a facebook album is unlimited. How does the company afford that bandwidth?

Ads - which is the same with many free online image hosts. Basically they say to the person wanting to advertise, look, we have such and such visitors daily - i mean look @ our bandwidth... which means your ad will get "x" amount of publicity, therefore we can charge you outrageous amounts to have your ad on our site.

Pretty simple logic.... they make money!

How much do people charge for advertising? What's typical?

Thing is I don't see ads?
Which is why I like it so much - clutter free!

There are ads, down the left side of the page under the main navigation. If you are using Firefox and have adblock I think it blocks them. They also have the marketplace where companies can look for potential employees. I'm sure the companies have to pay something for that as well. Then there are the flyers that are I think 5 dollars each. Considering the amount of people on facebook, they probably make a good chunk of change.
