View Full Version : Ie7 question

Hi all,

I notice that the latest MS windows updates include IE7 as standard. I recall that the beta of IE7.0 was riddled with bugs, particularly with the way in which it handled CSS.

Has anyone had time to have a good ol' bash at trying to break the official IE7 release? If so, what "funnies" have you noticed, if any? Does it fix many of the CSS non-compliance issues that FF has fixed? (e.g. min-height and min-width and omissions in the :hover pseudo class). I notice that it does hijack the web page's font settings if you enable the clear type option (although I don't know if that was present before because I never used it or looked for it!).

I've briefly looked at some of my own sites with IE7 and I've not yet seen anything to make my jaw hit the floor ... (the operative word here is "yet"!), but then my sites all run in non-quirks mode.

IE7 does fix a lot of old IE6 CSS bugs. Min-height is supported. So is min-width and yes it does support :hover on all elements. Keep in mind though IE7 will only work as expected when NOT in quirks mode. If in quirks mode then it reverts back to the IE6 display. Also IE7 is only available for Win XP SP2+.

The first thing that annoyed me with IE7 was the ClearType text that is supposed to make text more readable and yet makes it blurry even when you follow the link to optimise text for the monitor you're using. That really annoys me as it can make your work look a bit unprofessional if the text is blurry.

I agree that the cleartype thing is a bit of a nuisance, I've switched it off.

I was unaware of the IE6 "relapse" if IE7 runs in quirks mode - but that's ok because all my stuff is non-quirks mode ("normal mode", I suppose you would call it).

At any rate, I thought I would raise the subject because we're all going to have to code for IE7 as well as IE6 (and other popular browsers) now that the windows updates for XP+SP2 contain IE7 as standard.
