Making full color lines across page and boxes with backgrounds

I am wondering how i would go about puting a banner for the navigation bar for example... Myspace.com ALSO with the boxes subject. How would i put boxes in with there own backgrouns sortof like the ones at

if anyone has any insight into this please help. this is for a home project so its not that big of a deal but i would still like help
