View Full Version : giving away free server space

11-21-2002, 08:51 AM
I have a server that I am hosting at my house, that does not have much usage on it. I am willing to give anybody thats interested some free webspace (maby up to 50 megs) with no adds, ftp, unlimited monthly bandwidth. The only slightly disapointing thing is that I only have 256 kbps up load speed, and so the server won't deliver as much speed as other profesional servers. My server is up about 95% of the time, recently that is.

note: I have found out that its 128k not 256k

Nice offer, but I would if I had to, stay with Brinkster, or something else, which is up all the time.

Hello kwhubby,

I would be very interested in your offer. My present site www.lwphoto.com is hosted with www.dollarhost.com and I like their service.

But I also have www.stubby.ca which isn't up and running yet. Stubby.ca is a site about the old Canadian stubby beer bottles. If you could send me the information I need to get it to your server that would be great. Thanks.

I know another person who is doing the same thing with their personal server - and it can prove to be a wonderful learning experience, apparently.

I would just say as long as you are willing to experiment as much as the server host, and you are both trying to learn, and you don't have money clients depending upon your hosting, go for it.

This kind of shared knowledge is what makes the internet go 'round and you will both benefit greatly from this kind of experience!

I would like to thank kwhubby for the free server space for my new site. I am in the process of re-directing stubby.ca to this site, but the temp url is

I would like to know what people think of it. I might add thumbnails for the images if the pages take too long to load.

will you have php/mysql? i've been wanting to learn them.

Do you got ASP and mySQL support? If you do, I'd be interested in using your server. I'd only need about 30 megs plus the mySQL dbase but that isn't more than 1MB at the moment. I need it to test some stuff online and the webserver i was going to use is Apache and my host wants $35 to setup mySQL access.

I'd be interested as well. What kind of add-ons (ie: CGI / Perl / PHP / ASP / DB / Etc)? Not that I presently need any of them ( I don't know any of those languages ). Mostly curious. Shouldn't as well need much space / bandwidth. You can reach me at ZGarionsky@aol.com

Currently I only have asp support. If you could give me, and instruction me how to install (on windows 2000 server), I would definatly want to put support of mysql and cgi / perl, and also php. The only problem with giving so much away is that its at my personal house with dsl, at 128k up, and 1.3 meg down, this is a problem, If I had something like 512, or even 1 meg up, It would be a much different story. This is very fine for relativly low and slow usage with no more than about 3 people dowloading files at the same time, such as about a max of 900 megabytes uploading a day, although I would rather much less such as 200, to prevent high laging of my dsl. Since there are two people currently on my server (me and leonard) i have calculated, and amazed to find about 2400 file hits per day, making about 26 megabytes a day. I would gladly give you space, if you were not going to be using more than 70 megs uploading (dowloading for the rest of the world) day. If so give me email address, and we continue there.

I'm hosted the same way as you are suggesting. Server had a few probs to start with but now it runs excellent. Better than Binkster my previous host. Uptime is I'd say close to 99.99% ...

Since you are ASP I suggest that you should invest in an upload component.

www.aspupload.com - ASP Upload works well, I haven't been using it but I have access to use it and it works well with little scripting.

Also anupload http://www.adminsystem.net I think is the address, It is also a good com which I have installed on my computer.

Just some useful tid bits. :D

euuewww thanks for those "tid bits". And my server is progressivly getting more uptime, at the moment, its been on 24/7 for 2 weeks straight without any rebooting or restarting. Although accasionaly when i am expirementing with more complex things such as asp, and other server side stuff. I caouse wierd problems, and end up screwing up the server, even though i am not turning it off.

PHP support is breeze to install. www.php.net Just download the file and run the installer; it does everything automatically.

www.mysql.com for mySQL you'll want to download mySQL and myODBC I can step you through it. Send me an IM sometime on AIM and I can help you out.
