    Can I redirect from a /#/ folder? Should I?

    Hi,

I recently bought a pre-owned domain name that has a very powerful link pointing to it, but the link is pointing to this URL:

    www.domain.com/#/home/xyz

If I want to transfer over the power of that link to my site's homepage, do I need a 301 redirect? What is the significance of the # here? Any special htaccess rules I need to be aware of before I just slap on a 301?

    Thanks,

    Brandon

If you mean it's literally a hash tag you aren't going to be able to match that because the hash and anything after it isn't sent to the server. The browser uses that to point to anchors on the page. If you were using that to represent a number you can. Yes, you would want to use a 301.

This is slightly out of the scope of this thread, but are you saying I'd need to use a 301 redirect from that URL to the homepage URL if I want to preserve PageRank?

You will likely lose pagerank immediately if you setup a 301 redirect from the main page. But as long as the new page is the same content it should return within a few months. Just be aware that there could be repercussions and you may lose some traffic/revenue for a little while.
