hiding index.php from after / using .htaccess

Hi, I just upgraded my site from a windows server with .htm extensions to a unix/apache server with .php. Everything has been great.. I have my redirects all in my .htaccess file, but I am concerned that when someone types in the site name (like www.site.com) they see /index.php without even typing it. Previously, the index.htm would not appear unless that was included in a link or whatever... I've been looking for awhile now, but cannot find a way to hide index.php (using .htaccess?)

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Could you post your relevant htacces rules?
