Need help with processing data in the background

I am currently working on a project that entails quite a bit of math calculations. Some of the calculations need to be applied on data that isnt displayed on the page and I would like to enable an event handler that calls a page which runs the desired update process in the background (server side).

Can someone point me in the right direction? I am kind of new to AJAX and have pretty much only used scriptaculous' drag and drop scripts with any frequency. That being said, I am not quite sure how to make my own AJAX script that will run the code I need to run. I could easily do this with a standard form, but I would like to incorporate AJAX if at all possible. Thanks in advance for the help!

I will do this and see what I come up with. Still fairly new to AJAX and javascript as a whole. Not quite sure what the libraries are all about.
