open popup and check values and return to form

I want to know the best way to do this and if anyone has tutorials or samples
I have a form and I want to click on something to open a popup and then in that popup select a bunch of checkboxes and return the results to a hidden value on my form (while closing the popup)

This just seems like a lot of programming and trouble to use a popup to do this.
Is there any reason why you could not or don't want to just have the 'click on something' button display a div styled 'display:none;'?
The div is part of the form and you could have a hide button on it?
